Starved Rock Country Marathon and Half Marathon
May 14 @ 7:00 am

Now in its third year, the 2016 Starved Rock Country Marathon and Half Marathon have been described as a soon to be favorite in central Illinois.  The course will again encompass the scenery of the Illinois River, the neighborhoods of Ottawa and the rolling landscapes in and around Starved Rock State Park.  Runners will experience rolling country hills and natural characteristics that will inspire your run with scenic beauty. Runners will experience the highs and lows of the hills created by the Illinois River thousands of years ago. Our record eligible marathon course has 16 Aide stations and will again have GU on course at one aid station as well as Gatorade at each station.

The half route is an out and back style, but the scenery each direction along the widely considered flat route will make for a nice run through the country and city alike.

Each runner will receive a participant shirt, as well as finishers will receive a race specific medal.  Our medal will again be the third in the series.

In 2016, we welcome the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation as our new presenter.  With similar goals of enriching the area for both residents and visitors, the new partnership will only enhance offerings for the region we call Starved Rock Country.

Pokanoka’s Trail Run/Walk @ Shabbona Lake State Park
Jul 4 all-day

4th Annual Pokanoka’s Trail Run/Walk A Benefit for Safe Passage Shabbona Lake State Park www.pokanokasrun@aol.com On Monday, July 4th, 2016, at 8 AM, Pokanoka’s Cafe at Shabbona Lake State Park will host the 4th Annual Pokanoka’s Trail Run/Walk at Shabbona Lake State Park. The Trail Run/Walk is a fundraising event for Safe Passage, DeKalb County’ Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Agency. The mission of Safe Passage is to reduce or prevent domestic violence and sexual assault. Safe Passage offers a wide range of services to victims of domestic and sexual violence, including counseling, legal and medical advocacy, crisis intervention, community education, and a 24-hour support hotline. Established in 1981, Safe Passage continues to grow in an effort to serve more victims and their families. Pokanoka’s Trail Run/Walk is the most scenic, historic and unique Trail Run/Walk in Illinois. The Trail Run will be approximately 8 miles long. The Run will be along wooded trails and open prairie lands, as the runners circle around scenic Shabbona Lake. The Walk will be a circle loop thru approximately 1.8 miles of historic woods in Shabbona Lake State Park. Shabbona Lake State Park is located in Southern DeKalb County approximately 25 miles Southwest of DeKalb, Illinois. The Park attracts approximately 475,000 visitors a year. The 8 mile Trail Race/Walk will be timed by RACE TIME, Inc. from Winfield, Illinois. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in the following categories: Male, Female, Youth under 18. For you runners, we have a “hill” that is a gut checker. Then all of the sudden, as you are crossing a 1/2 mile earthen dam, you see in the distance, the finish line. You get that extra boost of energy, to bring it on home, to the cheers of the crowd!!! For you walkers, where else can you leisurely stroll thru historic woodland that once belonged to a brave Native American Indian, Chief Shabbona. Then as you exit the woods, you see the breath taking glistening beauty of Shabbona Lake. It makes a great day to be outdoors!!! This year the Run will start at precisely 8 AM. The Walk will start at 8:10 AM. Hope to see you on Monday, July 4th, 2016, at the 4th Annual Pokanoka’s Trail Run/Walk in Shabbona Lake State Park. All proceeds go to Safe Passage, DeKalb County’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center.
