the Final Canal Connection 10K @ Waltham South Elementary School

The Final Canal Connection 10K

Starved Rock Runners, Ltd. announces that due to unforeseen circumstances, the Canal Connection 10K, held in Utica, IL, will be run for the last time on November 3rd, 2019.

For 37 years this unique and iconic event, which is ran on 4.2 miles of the I-M Canal Towpath, featuring rock formations and autumn scenery, which is presented by Starved Rock Runners, Ltd., is part of the race circuits of Starved Rock Runners, Ltd., Lake Run Club, Illinois Valley Striders, and Springfield Road Runners Club.

In order to use the canal, an Activity Permit needs to be submitted for approval, along with a Permit to Sell document, which states since the event has a registration fee then Starved Rock Runners, Ltd. would agree then to pay a fee equal to 10% of total gross sales for using the Canal. The payment is due at the close of the final day of the event. In the past, the Permit to Sell fee was waived for a non-profit organization.

However this year, the Activity Permit was approved but the Permit to Sell fee waiver was denied, meaning now a 10 percent permit to sell fee for Canal Connection is requested, which Starved Rock Runners, Ltd. decided will pay only to have the final event this November.

It is a shame that this fee was not waived, as Starved Rock Runners, Ltd. proceeds are put back into the community and money is also spent by the participants after the event is over in the community. Proceeds from the event after expenses minus now the 10% fee will either cause the event to maybe break even, but also could cause a loss to Starved Rock Runners, Ltd.

Other circumstances is the upcoming sale of one of the two schools the event uses. The school can be used for the 2019 event but not after, meaning that a new venue would need to be found. This could mean a change in the course, buses, basically a revamp of this unique event.

Please spread the word to the running community of the Final Canal Connection 10K on November 3rd, 2019 so all runners can experience this one of a kind event, one last time.

New this year: the first 400 pre-registered runners are guaranteed a 1/4 zip pullover shirt. Race day registration and packet pick up will take place at the Waltham South Elementary School in Utica beginning at 7:30am and ending at 9:00am. Buses will begin to leave Utica at 8:00am with the last bus leaving at 9:15am to transport runners to the starting line at LP High School. ALL RUNNERS MUST REGISTER IN UTICA. Bag check service available. This USATF Certified course is chip times and features a downhill slope for the first .75 miles and the next 4.2 miles is flat unpaved surface of the I&M canal tow path. The race finishes on paved streets in Utica. Post race party with food and beverages at Waltham School in Utica. Split times are available at every mile. There will be two water stations and emergency crew covering the entire course. There is a 2 hour time limit to finish this 10K.

Oglesby 3 Mile Turkey Trot @ Holy Family School

The 3 Mile Run is a Starved Rock Runners, Ltd. Circuit Race. The Oglesby 3 Mile Turkey Trot, begins and ends at Holy Family School, 336 Alice Ave., Oglesby, IL 61348.

Race starts at 9:00AM sharp, regardless of weather.

Registration and packet pick up available Wednesday night from 4:30-6:30 at Holy Family School. Credit and debit Cards accepted. Race Day packet pickup will be from 7:00-8:30AM.

Entry fee is $25.00, $27.00 on Race Day. Family Special (4 in one family, mailed in one envelope, Mail-In ONLY), $75.00. Each additional family member is $15.00.

Free Beer after race (Must be 21 years of age with an ID). Must have wristband-pick-up at registration). Free soda after the race. Free Thanksgiving Dressing after the race. Free cap guaranteed to FIRST 900 entrants.

Race is chip timed. No chip, no time!

Awards: Plaque to Male and Female Champions. First three Male & Female finishers will receive a plaque. Awards to top five male and female finishers in age division.

Santas on the Run 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk @ John F. Kennedy School (west parking lot)

Santas On The Run benefits the Hall Township Food Pantry. You can run this 5K for time, or you can do it partake in the Holiday spirit. Preregistration includes your choice of a Red: Long Sleeve T-Shirt, a crew sweatshirt or hoodie, a Santa Hat and Beard. All participants are encouraged to wear their hat and beard (and bells if you have them) in the run/walk, but it is not mandated.

There will be water stops at approximately 1 & 2 miles, that will also include Holiday treats (cookies and candy).

The race will start and end in the parking lot of John F. Kennedy School (800 N. Richards, Spring Valley). The course is accurately measured and will be on paved city streets. The course is mostly flat with a few gentle uphills (in the 5K). Traffic control will be posted at all intersections to keep participants safe. Split times available at every mile.

The race will be electronically timed with results to be posted on the Starved Rock Runners web site.

As an added bonus, for each two non-perishable item an entrant brings to donate to the food pantry, their names will be entered into a raffle to be held after the race, with chances to win gift certificates and prizes from race sponsors.The more items you donate, the better your chances of winning (watch the web site as the list of potential winnings grows).

Awards will be given to the overall Male and Female finishers, as well as the top three finishers (Male and Female), in each of the following age groups: 9 & under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70 and over.

Packet pick up and race day registration will be available from 8:30AM until 9:30AM at John F Kennedy School. Day of registration is not guaranteed a shirt.
